The morning the Tony nominations are announced, phones start ringing off the hook for the happy few who get nods. As usual, Broadway.com is among the callers offering congratulations and getting responses. Here are the first reactions from 2010 Tony nominees. Congrats to all!
Dick Scanlan
Nominated for Best Book, Everyday Rapture
“I’m doing something I never do, because I very rarely drink. But I’ve got champagne glasses I never use and all this champagne that was given to us for opening night [of Everyday Rapture]. So I got some fresh squeezed orange juice last night and told my partner and a friend: ‘Tomorrow we’re making mimosas. We’ll either be celebrating or just getting drunk to console ourselves!’ I’m thrilled to report it’s the former. It was amazing this morning—both phones were ringing off the hook. It sounded like a smoke alarm. Having [been nominated before], I can say it feels completely different, because Everyday Rapture is such an odd and unique piece that it never occurred to me there’d be Tony interest in it until very recently. There’s a certain sweetness to this nomination, because it’s so unexpected. I try very hard to get my validation from the people I work with and never [from awards], but the Tony’s are so iconic! I grew up watching the Tony Awards every year, and you do wonder if some day you’ll be a part of that. In a way, it simply helps you measure how far you’ve come from where you began. Besides, no one can ever take [a nomination] away. It’s there, in a book!”
